Shower bag - Bath Blend of the Month

Shower bag - Bath Blend of the Month
I go the idea for this recipe from my friend Tina at The Essential Herbal.  She posted a recipe for Bath Scrubby on her herb blog back in 2013 that I have played around with ever since and this is my version of that.

I make shower bags with herbs and soap that can be used to wash with.  The key with a shower bag is the herbs must come in contact with the skin to impart their herbal properties. My solution was to put soap in it so that you would put it in contact with the skin.  Tina's recipe uses only herbs and you just wipe it over the skin after wetting it.  I like the variations that were possible with her recipe and came up with a blend that would soothe my sensitive skin and remove irritation from being outside and sun exposure.

Flower Bath Scrubbie

2 Tbls. calendula petals
2 Tbls  rose petals
1 Tbls  lavender buds
1 Tbls  chamomile flowers
1 Tbls  thyme or sage flowers

This makes about 3/8 to 1/3 of a cup of blend that is enough to fill one 3 x 4 inch cotton  (or you can place them in the center of a 10x10 inch square of muslin fabric and pull the edges together.)  To use in the shower, wet the bag and scrub over your skin.  The soothing properties of the flowers is perfect for your skin.

I like the method of brewing the bag in a pan of water and pouring that into the bath water as the best way to get the benefit of the flowers, but if you want to take a shower with this scrubbie, the key is to make sure the bag comes in contact with the skin.

Here is a breakdown of the benefits of the flowers:

Chamomilereduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also possessing anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Calendulahas anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, and helps to heal wounds and soothe damaged skin, such as sunburn, cuts and scrapes.

Rose - Antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties in roses make them wonderfully soothing for skin, especially swollen spots and redness.

Sage - the antioxidants in sage reduce fine lines and wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Thyme - is an anti-bacterial herb that can be used on skin bacteria that creates acne, and an antifungal agent that works on eczema.

Lavenderis rich in a compound called linalool that assists with skin healing while also preventing tissue degeneration keeping skin firm and preventing wrinkles.

Calendula and Rose Sea salt - Bath Blend of the Month

Calendula and Rose Sea salt - Bath Blend of the Month
Last moth I suggested a Calendula Tea for the bath.  You can also make a soothing blend of softening herbs and sea salt that includes calendula.

Calendula and Rose Sea Salt
Rose petals
Rosemary
Calendula petal
½ cup sea salt

Directions:
Combine all the ingredients together.  The amount of flowers and herbs is up to you, the more the merrier.  Place them all in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shape well.  Allow them to meld for two weeks before using.

To Use: Place a large handful of the mixture in a muslin bag and place in a filling bath.  Soak and enjoy.

Rose is soothing to skin and calendula will relieve dry itching and irritated skin. Rosemary is lightly astringent and is rejuvenating and stimulating.

Calendula Bath
This is a great way to get rid of itchy, irritated or dry skin. Calendula is a perfect herb for skin, taken as a tea internally or used in the bath externally it will bring back a softness and glow to skin.  The gentleness of this simple bath tea allows you to sue it over and over.

1/4 to 1/2 cup Calendula Petals
2 cup boiling water

Stir the Calendula petals into boiling water.  Steep until the water is room temperature, then strain into the bath water and soak.

Bath Blend of the Month - Healing Salt Blend

Bath Blend of the Month - Healing Salt Blend
This recipe contains baking soda which is used to cleanse and detoxify the body, and a blend of essential oils that are known for their cold-symptom-helping qualities. Since January is the height of flu season I thought this blend might be just what you need, especially after a stressful holiday season.

    Healing Salt Bath Blend
    • 1 cup Epsom salts
      1 cup sea salt
      1 cup baking soda

      25 drops eucalyptus essential oil
      17 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops pine or cedar essential oil
      5 drops peppermint essential oil
Directions:Measure out the salts and mix them together well, making sure to break up any clumps. I find that a large, wide, stainless steel bowl works best for blending the salts. Add the essential oils. Mix everything together well. Scoop the salts into jars or other air-tight containers.

Note: The essential oil blend is pretty flexible. If you don't have one of the oils, you can leave them out, or sometimes even substitute. The eucalyptus is the main part of the blend. The lavender is there to round it out a bit and give a bit of "relaxing" quality. Tea tree is a great anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Pine and peppermint are used for loosening up your nasal passages.

Ginger Mint Bath - Bath Blend of the Month

Ginger Mint Bath - Bath Blend of the Month
As the weather gets chilly and sometimes wet a warming bath is usually in order. Bathing in a bath of ginger will ease sore muscles, eliminate toxins from the body.  The natural anti bacterial properties in ginger will help sweat out colds, flues, and congestion.  Adding ginger to your bath on a cool day will raise the temperature of your skin and make you feel warm & toasty.

    Ginger Mint  Bath Recipe
Chop one tablespoon of fresh, ginger root
Crumble 1 handful (1/2 cup dried / 1 cup fresh) mint leaves
Add both to your running bath. Soak & relax.

    Bath Blend of the Month

    Bath Blend of the Month
Fall is almost here, school has started and I am exhausted from harvesting herbs day and night.  it is time for some rejuvenation!  So here is an herb combo designed to give you just what is needed to make you fresh and new again!

    Rejuvenation Bath Blend

    • 1/2 Cup Lavender
    • 1/2 Cup Rose Petals
    • 1/2 Cup Sage
    • 1/2 Cup Rosemary
Mix the herbs as dry ingredients and store in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Stuff a metal tea ball or muslin bag with the blend (lace or cotton fabric will also work). As you run your bath, place the tea ball or bag in the tub, under the running water. Then, relax and enjoy!

Sun Healing Milk Bath - Bath Blend of the Month

Sun Healing Milk Bath - Bath Blend of the Month
Did you know Cleopatra’s beauty was attributed to her love of milk baths?  Milk contains lactic acid, which is packed with skin softening properties that leave skin feeling smoother and more resilient. The lactic acid in milk acts similarly to the alpha hydroxyl acids found in expensive skin creams, which dissolve proteins that bind dead skin cells together.  Milk baths are also great for soothing burns and skin after spending too much time in the sun!

Milk baths are best with powdered milk.  Add two cups of powdered milk to your bath while it’s filling.  Herbs and honey can be added to give additional benefits.  The recipe below has herbs to soothe, soften and protect skin form the ravages of summer sun.

    Sun Healing Milk Bath
    2 cups powdered milk
1 Tbls Thyme, lemon or common
    1 Tbls. Sage
    1 Tbls Marjoram
    1 Tbls Rose petals
    1 Tbls Basil leaves
Place the milk in the water while filling the tub.  Place the herbs in a bag and swirl through the water while filling tub, then allow to soak in the water while you bathe.  The herbs will kill germs, soften skin and reduce inflammation. Soak and relax!

Lavender Oat Sachets - Bath Blend of the Month

Lavender Oat Sachets - Bath Blend of the Month
    Lavender Oatmeal Sachet
2 cups plain old fashioned oats
    1 tablespoon dried lavender buds
    2 tsp. chamomile flowers
    1/2 cup baking soda
    small muslin bags

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender or a food processor and pulse until the mixture looks like flour.

Fill each muslin bag with the mixture and tie shut. If you don’t have muslin bags, you can simply add about 1/3 cup to a hot bath, under running water.  I prefer using a muslin bag to hold homemade bath soaks because it cuts down on clean up time.

This blend can be stored in a glass jar and just fill the muslin bag as needed.  When done, just dump out the contents and rinse the bag out to dry for next time.

We currently make these as a product of Backyard Patch Herbs, so you can get 5 draw-string tea bags of this mixture in a colored canning jar.

Muscle Saver Bath - Bath Blend of the Month

Muscle Saver Bath - Bath Blend of the Month
Much garden work is being done at my house as I put in gardens where none were before.  The shoveling, the raking, the building of raised beds, it is all good for me, but my muscles sometimes scream in protest.  This aromatic bath is good for relaxing muscles and relieving stress.  It is also valuable to those with arthritis.  I find this is very helpful when my hands start aching. Juniper berry’s essential oil breaks down the surface tension of the epidermis helping the skin absorb the beneficial aspects of the remaining herbs.
    Muscle-Saver Bath

    1 tsp. juniper berries
    2 Tbls. dried peppermint
    2 Tbls. dried spearmint
2 Tbls lavender flowers and leaves

Place all the ingredients in a square of muslin or a handkerchief, tie up with string.  Or place in an unbleached muslin bag or coffee filter.  Place the bag in the tub while it fills with water.  The bag acts like a giant tea bag, turning your bath into a therapeutic herbal tea.  Use the soaked bag to scrub your skin.  If you prefer a shower, soak the bag of herbs in the shower and then use it like a washcloth.

Monthly Bath Blend - Tub Teas

Monthly Bath Blend - Tub Teas
Bath teas are fun! Big teabags filled with scented herbs and other special ingredients that you just toss in your tub and soak.

The best way to use a tub tea is to brew it. Place the bag in 1 cup of water in a saucepan and boil for 10 to 15 minutes.  Place the resulting liquid in the bath water of a filled tub.  You can also just place the tea bag in tub while you fill it, or if you don't take baths, you can use them as a foot soak or shower scrub (simply wet the teabag then gently use it as a herbal washcloth for your skin).

We are including a free bath tea with every order in the month of April. You will receive our choice of bath tea – we now have five different blends available.  We will choose one that suits the herbs in your order.

NEW - Lavender Mint Tub Tea is excellent for refreshing and cleansing, perfect for oily skin.

Oatmeal & Cinnamon Bath Soak - Bath Blend of the Month

Oatmeal & Cinnamon Bath Soak - Bath Blend of the Month
Soothing oatmeal, milk and cornstarch will help with dry windblown skin.  Cinnamon is naturally warming.  Together this blend will soothe and warm and is perfect for winter weather.

    Oatmeal & Cinnamon

    1 1/2 cups powdered milk
    3/4 cup baking soda
3/4 cup oatmeal (finely grind it first)
    3 Tbls cornstarch
    2 tsp cream of tartar
    2 tsp cinnamon

Before getting started, make sure that any herbs or oatmeal are first ground finely (use a food processor if possible). This helps keep things clump free.  Then blend the ingredients together and keep in a jar with a tight fitting lid.  Use a muslin bag or square of cotton cloth to hold the herbs for use in the bath.

To USE:  Place ½ cup of mixture in a cloth bath and suspend in the tub while filling with water.  Use the bag to scrub body while soaking.  Discard herbs after bath.

Monthly Bath Blend - Cinnful MIlk Bath

Monthly Bath Blend - Cinnful MIlk Bath
Salts can be drying in the winter, so I like to use blends that have no salt in the tub from time to time.  This blend is made with Backyard Patch Cinnful Dessert Blend.

Milk, especially powdered milk, is great for soothing the skin and making it silky soft.  Coupled with cornstarch and you have a rich bath that will cool down the winter burn and aid skin healing.  Add to that the lovely seasonal scent of cinnamon and you have a real treat.

    Cinnfull Milk Bath

    1 cup powdered milk
    1 cup baking soda
    3 Tbls. cornstarch
    2 Tbls. cream of tartar
1 1/2 Tbls. BYP Cinnfull Dessert Blend

Combine all the ingredients together in a tightly lidded jar and shake vigorously.  Once they are combined scoop a couple of tablespoons into a warm bath and enjoy the scent.  If you want to avoid a brown ring (cinnamon does not dissolve) place the mixture in a coffee filter and bind with a rubber band before placing in the tub.

Monthly Bath Blend - Sugar Cookie Bath Salts

Monthly Bath Blend - Sugar Cookie Bath Salts
There are few things that rival a nice warm bubble bath to reduce stress and find comfort. I have always advocated a nice soak in the tub and recently have found with the stress of moving, relocating the business and trying to keep up with orders, lectures and shows that I am in need of the healing powers of the bath.

I have also found that you can easily turn your tub into a spa like experience easily and cheaply.  This recipe is not only sweet smelling and fun, it makes a great gift that although it smells like a cookie has absolutely no calories!

The added benefit of these salts is they are full of magnesium sulphate.  This mineral reduces stress and eases muscle tension and inflammation.
    Sugar Cookie Bath Salts
    6 cups Epsom salts
    1 Tbls. canola oil
    4 drops vanilla extract
    1/2 cup unscented liquid soap
    1 tsp cinnamon

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper.  I have cookie sheets that are never used for baking and I used those, but I still lined them.  Spread the salt on the sheet.  Place oil, liquid soap and vanilla in a mixing bowl.  Use your hands to mix thoroughly.  Pour the wet mixture over the salts. Sprinkle the cinnamon lightly over all the entire mixture. Allow to air-dry until the moisture is completely gone. Store in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.  Keep in a cool and dry location.

To use: Add a scoop into a warm bath and breath deeply. (When gift giving be sure to include a scoop!)

Monthly Bath Recipe - Chamomile Arthritis Bath Salts

Monthly Bath Recipe - Chamomile Arthritis Bath Salts
I have developed arthritis in one hand and my hip.  It is early yet and may be able to be controlled with physical therapy, but it does have occasion to interrupt my sleep, so since we now have a nice deep bathtub, I decided to work on bath salts for soothing  joint pain.

This blend for the bath tub is a combination of Chamomile and Lavender with Epsom salts.  All of which are great for reducing inflammation.

I generally use heat seal tea bags for blends like this, but I know not everyone has access to those, so if you don't you might want to try sewing these up in a used dryer sheet. Just fold the sheet in half and stitch it closed on the two of the three open sides, if you have a sewing machine you can make quick work of this.  Then fill it and hand stitch closed the last side.

Chamomile has strong anti-inflammatory benefits, making it a great addition to the warm bath along with relaxing Lavender. Epsom salts also have an anti-inflammatory effect for soaking.  Combine the added benefit of hot water to increase circulation  and you have a great therapeutic bath that eases joint pain and reduces sore muscles. Some slow, deep breathing is useful as well for relaxation.

    Chamomile Arthritis Bath Salts
    1 cup Epsom salts
    1 cup sea salt
    1 cup baking soda
    3 Tablespoons Chamomile flowers
    2 Tablespoons Lavender buds
    12 drops chamomile essential oil
    10 drops lavender essential oil

Use about 1 cup of mixture per sachet.

Your bath salt sachet gets tossed into the running hot bath and the fabric keeps the herbs from clogging the drain and making for messy clean up.
